Guiding Light
In the wake of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center, true heroes emerged. Follow New York City Police Officer Moira Smith who witnessed the attacks firsthand and immediately jumped into action. She sacrificed her own life to provide the guiding light that helped hundreds out of the south tower in the minutes leading up to its collapse. Based on the true story and in honor of Officer Moria Smith. Additional material provides an overview of the events of the day and other stories of heroes at Ground Zero.

This volume spotlights police officer Moira Smith who used her flashlight, her wits, and her bravery to lead dozens of people out of the World Trade Center’s south tower to safety before ultimately being trapped and killed by the collapse of the building.
The author and illustrator both convey the danger and horror of that day without subjecting young readers to the carnage of the tragedy. Instead, readers see an officer who loves her family, loves her job, and calmly performs her job with great courage during a crisis.
